When weâre finished, Jake gets up and starts picking up our clothes. âHere,â he says and holds out mine.
I snatch them and start to get dressed. Now that all the exhilaration has worn off, Iâm left feeling more confused than ever. Jake has been deliberately cruel to me ever since he got back from Chicago. I get that we both acted on impulse, but now heâs being nice. It canât be because of my innocence regarding the theftâthat wasnât an issue when he first saw me here.
Once he has his pants on and buckled, he slides his dress shirt on without buttoning it up. Then, he gathers the near-empty food boxes from off the table and returns them to the paper bag from the restaurant. Thankfully, we ate most of it beforehand. He also takes it upon himself to empty the contents of his trash can into the paper bag.
âWait here,â he says and wanders out into the hallway with the bag.
Iâm blown away by how unfazed he is walking out of his office when he isnât even fully dressed. Is there really no one else here? No maintenance people? I suppose Jake would know better than anyone whether weâre alone or not.
When he returns, clearly without running into anyone, he gives me a soft smile.
Call me a skeptic, but I feel like Iâm being fooled by the devil right now. Is it possible to change so drastically in just a few minutes? Even though he was only suspecting that I was behind the embezzled money, I feel like his initial hostility, and this change, extends deeper than what he shows.
Iâd rather not make assumptions or dig up the past right now. Iâm already feeling a bit guilty for staying here for so long. Proving my innocence is one thing, but having sex with Jakeâ
âWe can resume tomorrow,â he says as he buttons up his shirt at last.
I widen my eyes. âWhat?â
âOur investigation. I was saying we can pick up where we left off tomorrow.â
I scoff. âI knew what you meant,â I say, but I can feel my face flush. I really need to get my head out of the gutter.
A laugh escapes Jake, but itâs brief. He grabs his work bag and car keys. âCome on. Iâll drive you home.â
âNo, no, Iâll take a cab.â
âI wouldnât feel comfortable having you go home on your own,â Jake says, but seeing my discomfort, he relents.
We make our way out of the building, and he waits with me for the cab to arrive, much like we waited for his driver six years ago.
âMake sure to come to my office first thing in the morning,â he tells me as the cab stops right in front of us.
I nod and start to walk when Jake grabs my hand and pulls me closer. He cups my face in his hands and brings his lips to mine. Thereâs a tenderness in his kiss that Iâve never experienced before. I can feel his exhale as our noses brush.
